Abstract

Objective. To evaluate relevant literature that compares the overall quality of life following intervention for rotator cuff tendinopathy using either corticosteroid (CS) injections or platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections. Methods. Literature was gathered through PubMed and CINAHL databases and was reviewed for the comparison of CS injections and PRP injections when treating RC tendinopathy. Results. Out of the nine studies analyzed in this review, four studies found PRP injections superior for functional improvement. Three studies reported short-term pain relief with no long-term differences. Two studies found both treatments to be equally effective. There was no evidence that supported CS injections to be superior to PRP injections. Conclusions. When treating RC tendinopathy, PRP injections may offer superior functional improvement and short-term pain relief. Both treatments show similar long-term outcomes. Keywords. Rotator cuff tendinopathy; rotator cuff tears; platelet-rich plasma; corticosteroid; tendon degeneration; inflammation.
