Trends in AI Publishing Policy in Media

Abstract

This study describes and classifies trends in mainstream media policy toward the use of artificial intelligence in editorial and publishing capacities. The question of what patterns are present in current AI policies is important because AI’s impacts on the media may alter journalistic practices. Specifically, this study will add to the understanding of the trends and patterns in corporate policies in this emerging frontier. Beyond generalizations, understanding the nuances of various AI policies allows individuals to be more informed consumers of media.

The data set for this study was defined according to a 2021 Pew Research poll, which identified seven companies as “mainstream” media. The publicly available AI policies from these companies were examined by the researcher as they were published on March 5, 2026. Each policy was then closely read to identify tone, methodology of use, and ethical or moral stance. A trend of emphasizing AI as an efficient tool is present in most policies. Additional trends include a distinction between using AI for editing and summaries; locating the decision making; responsibility placement; listing guiding values; and setting standards for disclosure. Case studies were selected to highlight examples of the given patterns.

We often find ourselves treating AI as a dichotomy between extreme use or lack of use, but the reality is more nuanced. This research highlights the policies that shape publishing for large media companies as they adapt to the changes in algorithmic technology, which continues to alter how we approach writing.
