The Importance of the Four Communes

Abstract

The Four Communes of Senegal were four cities in colonial Senegal that received certain democratic freedoms in the wake of the 1789 revolution. The research of this anomaly teaches us broader lessons about human resilience and the pursuit of progress. The research examines this through the figures of Blaise Diagne, the first native Senegalese representative of Dakar, Leopold Senghor, Senegal’s first President, and different soldiers who fought in World War One. Additionally, the research investigates the 1917 bubonic plague outbreak in Dakar that changed the trajectory and environment of the city. These changes include the creation of Medina in Dakar and the harsh realities faced by the native Senegalese in this crisis. The beauty that arose out of this crisis is important for the understanding of humanity. The lives of Blaise Diagne and Leopold Senghor and the countless others that this research touches highlight the resilience required to fight for the four communes, offering enduring models of perseverance and leadership.
