Abstract
Older adults with Alzheimer’s disease commonly experience agitation and anxiety, which negatively affect quality of life and interfere with activities of daily living. These behavioral symptoms present significant challenges for patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers. This evidence-based practice review examines the effectiveness of music therapy as a nonpharmacological intervention for reducing agitation and anxiety in adults aged 65 years and older diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Music therapy, which includes activities such as singing, listening to music, and instrument play, engages brain regions associated with emotion and long-term memory, promoting relaxation and emotional well-being. Findings from the reviewed evidence suggest that music therapy can reduce behavioral symptoms, improve mood, and enhance overall quality of life in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. Incorporating music therapy into nursing care may provide a safe, cost-effective approach to managing agitation and anxiety while supporting holistic, patient-centered care.
