Abstract
The Carroll Guatemala Engineers Without Borders (EWB) team gathered in Houston Texas before traveling together to Guatemala City on a 7:15 PM flight on Saturday night. Amy Mohr came in from Pittsburg, PA, I came in from San Diego, Killian Cunniff came in from Ecuador (dentists without borders trip) and seven others from Helena (Michael Brennan professional mentor from Morrison-Maierle, Jacob Johnson – project leader, and the following students: Sam Davis, Patrick Majerus, Steven Cornish – health and safety officer, Brittany Crawford, and Caitlin Walter. We arrived in Guatemala City just after 10 pm and went through the experience of customs, then find your luggage, find out if it gets to be inspected, and then turn in the second half of the customs sheet. We opened the doors to the street to face the cry of taxi drivers and others with signs. I saw the familiar face of Sheila McShane director of the Clinica Maxen in Santo Tomas. She, her driver Ciruilo, and Lucita from the Novo Hostal (business manager of the place we were staying that evening) brought all ten of us and our stuff to the Hostal. Very nice accommodations. Some of the students tried to get me to order pizza after midnight but no one answered the phone and I told them it probably wasn’t safe for the delivery person so went to bed.
