Abstract

Objective: To review literature regarding the benefits of massage therapy for treating the symptoms of osteoarthritis. Methods: PubMed, CINAHL and Google Scholar were used to identify articles included in this systematic review. These studies looked at massage therapy and its effects on osteoarthritis. Results: Seven of the eight articles used in this review found that massage therapy reduced the patients’ symptoms of osteoarthritis and increased their quality of life. The other article found that the optimal dosage of massage therapy needed to get the best results was once a week for 60 minutes. Conclusion: Massage therapy has many positive effects on reducing symptoms of osteoarthritis. Massage therapy has shown to reduce pain, increase range of motion, and improve quality of life.
