Abstract

Prussian Blue, traditionally synthesized in solution from ferric and ferrocyanide ions, was prepared here via solvent-free mechanochemistry. Initially, the main goal of this research was to study the reaction rates of solid-state formation of Prussian Blue; however, prolonged grinding alone did not yield the characteristic rich blue product. Instead, with the solventless reaction, water or lack thereof, was discovered to play a critical role in the complete synthesis of Prussian Blue. It was observed that the low ambient humidity (<10%) halted product formation, and direct addition of water was necessary to develop the rich blue color associated with the pigment, indicating reaction completion. Using ferric chloride and potassium ferrocyanide, with the addition of water, Prussian Blue was successfully synthesized and then characterized via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Additional precursor combinations were also investigated, where the valence states of iron were varied, yet in all cases, water was necessary for the solid-state reaction to reach completion. These findings highlight the necessity of a humid environment for solid-state mechanochemical synthesis of Prussian Blue and provide insight into optimizing solvent-free methods for efficient production.
