Abstract

Celiac disease is a chronic autoimmune disorder in which the ingestion of gluten damages the lining of the small intestine, leading to inhibited nutrient absorption, diarrhea, fatigue, and abdominal pain. The most commonly used diagnostic approach for celiac disease is antibody testing, which requires patients to consume a gluten-containing diet for approximately six to twelve weeks prior to testing. This requirement may be time-consuming, uncomfortable for patients, and, in some cases, may contribute to delayed diagnosis and prolonged intestinal inflammation. Delays in diagnosis can increase the risk of complications, including intestinal damage and associated inflammatory conditions. The WBAIL-2 blood test is a newer diagnostic method that requires reduced gluten exposure and a shorter testing period, potentially minimizing patient discomfort and expediting diagnosis. The purpose of this evidence-based review is to compare traditional antibody testing with the WBAIL-2 blood test to determine the most accurate diagnostic method for adults with celiac disease through the comparative review of diagnostic accuracy studies. Identifying the most accurate diagnostic approach may enhance nursing practice by improving diagnostic efficiency, facilitating earlier treatment initiation, reducing the risk of complications, and ultimately improving patient outcomes.
