Abstract
In this paper we examine gender stereotypes used in the 2006 teen film, She’s the Man, in which Viola, a teenage girl, temporarily poses as her brother at a boarding school. We examine how archetypal masculine activities as well as gender-ambiguous activities (such as cross-dressing) are utilized in the film to tell the story of crossing gendered boundaries. We compare these aspects of the film to research on advantages of masculinity over femininity. We find that Viola’s temporary venture into masculinity affects the social advantages that she received, proving that men have advantages over women socially.
