Abstract

Many different interventions for mental illnesses—conditions affecting mood, behavior, and thoughts—are used to change lives and improve overall well-being. As mental health is becoming a rising issue in the world today, the demand for effective interventions is increasing. The purpose of this evidence-based review is to examine the effects of music therapy on people who struggle with mental health and whether it improves psychosocial health or not. Music therapy is the clinical use of music to achieve the goal of improved health and welfare. Six articles pertaining to music therapy and mental health were reviewed for this study. These articles address depression, dementia, insomnia, and anxiety. Studies were conducted in the adult population to determine if different genres and types of music affected their mental health condition positively, negatively, or had no effect at all. If this evidence-based review analyzes that music positively reinforces psychosocial health, it may pave the way for better patient outcomes and overall care provided to the patients.
