Abstract

Animals in therapy serve the purpose of providing emotional relief and positive mental health benefits to the individuals in a variety of settings such as retirement homes, schools, and hospitals. Animals used in animal assisted therapy tend to be dogs and horses, however, exotic animals such as llamas, birds, pigs, and even alligators have been used. Increasing the integration of exotic animals in therapy provides the chance to broaden the opportunity for individuals to connect with an animal. With a greater number of animals available in an animal assisted therapy setting, there is an increased capacity for people to find an animal that they can connect with. As a result, individuals interacting with the animal can more fully embrace the positive impacts that animal assisted therapy can bring.
