Description
Abstract
The characteristics of ice flow in rivers are not well understood. In order to better understand surface ice flow, computer model Ice_Flow_Poly has been developed. Ice_Flow_Poly is based on a relatively new technique called the Discrete Element Method (DEM). This model simulates randomly shaped irregular polygons flowing through a straight channel. Hydrodynamic, gravitational, and mechanical interparticle forces are all included in the simulation. Computer animation software has also been developed. This software allows the user to visually monitor progress of the simulation.
