Abstract
Using the D-M-A-I-C Six Sigma methodology, Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control, our team is working with St. Peter’s Health in Helena, Montana, to improve patient safety by reducing catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). The Six Sigma approach applies the scientific method to systematically evaluate and improve processes. During the Define and Measure phases, we established the project scope, reviewed CAUTI performance metrics, and mapped the hospital's current catheter lifecycle process. In the Analyze phase, tools such as the Cause & Effect matrix and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) are used to identify and prioritize key factors contributing to CAUTI risk. Based on these findings, the Improve phase will focus on recommending targeted solutions to reduce infection risk and, where appropriate, catheter utilization. Finally, the Control phase will outline methods to sustain improvements through monitoring, documentation practices, and standardized protocols. Through this structured approach, the project aims to support St. Peter’s Health in improving patient outcomes, reducing preventable harm, and aligning with national quality benchmarks.
