Abstract
This project examines rhetoric associated with the international response to the Dominican Parsley Massacre in 1937 under Rafael Leonidas Trujillo’s regime. The Parsley Massacre was an international incident in which many Haitian’s were killed by the Dominican military under orders from Trujillo. International response to the massacre was heavily influenced by the ideological conflict between capitalism and communism. As conflicts between capitalism and communism grew, the focus of many capitalist states on the international stage was to prevent the spread of communism to non-communist states; International responses to the Parsley massacre reflect polarized ties to the first and second world ideologies in the global debate. My project focuses on the rhetoric surrounding international response to the massacre and contextualizing to what extent these responses addressed or avoided terminology associated with eugenics and condemnation of Trujillo’s regime.
