Abstract

Objective: To review relevant literature studying the effects of milk consumption on early adolescent bone health. Methods: Relevant literature was gathered through PubMed and CINAHL and assessed for measuring the effects of milk consumption on adolescents’ bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC) and body mass index (BMI). Interventions included milk consumption surveys to measure the amount of milk consumed and calcium carbonate tablets administered at clinical dosage. Results: The reviewed relevant literature helped support the hypothesis that adolescent bone health is positively affected through healthy milk consumption. There were no serious connections of milk consumption and negative bone health in adolescents. Healthy milk consumption did contribute to healthier BMD, BMI and BMC in adolescent bone health. Conclusions: Healthy milk consumption has been associated with improved BMD, BMI and BMC in adolescents. More research on types of milk or dairy products is needed to further prove the positive effects of milk consumption on bone health.
