Abstract

Objective: To review relevant literature regarding efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections compared to hyaluronic acid (HA) injections for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis in adults. Methods: Literature was gathered through PubMed and CINAHL and assessed for comparison of PRP and HA injections for treatment of knee osteoarthritis. Results: The reviewed literature generally supported that PRP injections are beneficial to HA injections in several clinical measures. There was no common linkage between PRP injections or HA injections and negative long term outcomes. PRP proved beneficial in decreasing patient symptoms such as knee pain and swelling, increasing knee function, and decreasing risk of total knee replacement arthroplasty. Conclusions: The use of PRP injections and HA injections as treatment for knee osteoarthritis in adult patients has shown positive outcomes in alleviation of pain and swelling, as well as improving function. PRP and HA injections can both be recommended for treating knee osteoarthritis in adults.
