A brief biographical sketch of Thomas Jefferson's life before the passage of his Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom will serve as a foundation in examining Jefferson's conception of the separation of church and state. Thomas Jefferson was born in 1743 in Goochland County, Virginia. Jefferson's father lacked a formal education and hence planned to give his eldest son Thomas the best attainable. When he was five years old, Thomas Jefferson was sent to a fine English school in Virginia. At nine , Jefferson attended the Latin School of Mr. Douglas, a clergyman from Scotland.
