Abstract
This presentation will explore the ideas of John Locke and Virginia Woolf on what freedoms human beings should have and what happens when those rights are removed. Locke’s Second Treatise of Government lays out his philosophy on how governments are formed and should function. He believes that freedom and tolerance are important to have a functioning society. Woolf’s work A Room of One’s Own highlights some of the effects of a group of people being denied the freedom to think and do as they please. A lack of freedom can lead to poverty, and moral and intellectual decline.
