Abstract
Objective: To review current literature that examines myofascial release compared to other manual therapy techniques as a treatment for chronic pain.
Methods: In January and February of 2026, literature was gathered from PubMed, CINAHL, and the Carroll Library Search that pertained to myofascial release as a treatment for chronic pain. Eight studies met the criteria.
Results: Almost all the studies reviewed found that myofascial release was effective in treating chronic pain symptoms. One study had inconclusive results for myofascial release as a treatment for chronic mechanical neck pain. Evidence suggests myofascial release is more effective as treatment for varying types of chronic pain when compared to other manual therapy techniques.
Conclusion: Myofascial release is a non-invasive manual therapy technique that is proven to treat and manage chronic pain. Clinicians should consider implementing myofascial release in practice as a treatment for patients with chronic pain.
