Abstract

In order to maintain the imagination as a beneficial instrument, a certain degree of control is imperative. Given too free a rein, an unchecked imagination causes a scientist to become too much of a dreamer or a philosopher to become too much of a visionary. Reith compares the imagination to t tool shop for the mind; if it is not kept orderly and uncluttered, even though it may contain the finest tools, it can be a dangerous place to work. "The intellect must operate with a controlled imagination."
