Abstract
A study was performed at the Montana State Public Health Laboratory to determine the incidence of rash illness caused by Parvovirus B19 and to determine the prevalence of previous infection with Parvovirus B19 in rash illness patients. These prevalency rates were also compared to age. Antibody capture enzyme immunoassay (EIA) technique was used to determine the presence of IgG and IgM antibodies in blood sera of 32 patients with rash illnesses.
Eleven of the 32 patients tested positive for IgG antibodies against the Parvovirus B19, indicating 34% of the patients had previous infection with the virus. In the age groups 0-5 yr, 6-19 yr, and 20 + yr, the percentages of positive tests were 9.1%, 62.5%, and 41.7%, respectively. In the IgM antibody tests, three of the 32 patients tested positive.
