The fundamental purpose of this treatise is to turn into English the Latin text of St. Augustine's De Magistro. The method has been but to make clear the thoughts expressed by St. Augustine, although some may still be doubtful, howsoever diligent the application may have been. I wish to express gratitude to the Professor, Rev. Paul B. Kirchen, under whose charge this was written. I ask this boon of the reader that if the translation be somewhat complicated in parts, he will attribute it not to negligence on my part by to the technicalities of the subject.
