Abstract
I should like to present a theory of regional literature which seems to be indigenous to our own "vacuum." In my thesis I shall emphasize a particular human quality of regional literature called "universal rusticity."
The very kernel of this thesis germinates from the term "universal rusticity"; and it seems to me that Thomas Hardy, the famous English regional writer, best shows how a regional writer can create a rustic hero with the quality of "rusticity," thereby giving aesthetic meaning to a particular regional milieu. Hardy evinces this quality in two of his novels which will be examined in order to prove my thesis of rusticity.I should like to present a theory of regional literature which seems to be indigenous to our own "vacuum."
