Abstract
Objective. To evaluate relevant literature on the effectiveness of transcutaneous nerve stimulation (TENS) in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. Methods. Studies found through PubMed and CINAHL databases were reviewed for correlations between the use of transcutaneous nerve stimulation (TENS) and effectiveness of knee osteoarthritis (OA) treatment. Results. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) was shown to be an effective treatment in several ways. It was shown to decrease pain associated with knee osteoarthritis (OA), improve physical test scores, and to be just as effective as intra-articular corticosteroid injections. Conclusions. Transcutaneous nerve stimulation has shown to be an effective treatment for knee osteoarthritis (OA). Although the only true solution to knee OA is a complete knee arthroplasty, TENS has shown to have beneficial effects on the symptoms associated with knee OA.
